DEATH CERTIFICATE - VIRGINIA
Provides certified death certificates for individuals who died in the Commonwealth of Virginia after 6/1912. Death records become public information 50 years after the date of the event. Prior to that time, they are available to immediate family members only. Death certificates may be requested in person (same day service available in Richmond), via U.S. mail (5 - 10 business days), or via fax/phone/online through Vitalchek (2 - 3 business days). Regardless of request method, the following information is needed to process a request: name at time of death, place of death, date of death, relationship to the deceased, reason for the certificate, requestor's daytime phone
